Pick N Mix – Week Starting 17 November 2008
- Typography whores must already know about this website but I’ve just stumbled on ILoveTypography.com. So pretty!
- The male guide to selecting an outfit, and 25 things men need to know about style and fashion. Unless you’re Richard of course.
- Beautiful art pieces made from books
- Scenes from Antarctica
- 50 easy ways to help the planet. Presented in a simple pretty format.
- Rambo death chart. I’ve never watched a Rambo movie but I still found this funny, and very reflective on society.
- I can’t believe we still have to protest this crap!
- The marketers attitude. Seth Godin outlines the qualities a great marketer should have. Sounded like he was describing me for much of it, but I’ve never had the feeling employers actually want someone that interesting. Just someone who will do what they’re told and has experience…snore.
- I found this gorgeous dark online comic called FreakAngels. I am deeply in love with the artwork.

Re: the marketers attitude. Marketing is one of the few areas where ‘someone interesting’ (and I use the term in a very broad sense) should be exactly what an employer is looking for. You need to be able to come up with crazy, ludicrous, OTT ideas. It’s reigning the ideas in to something actually workable, that little bit of common sense that lets you carry it through to success, that is the unusual skill.
Let me just say that I am in no way a marketer, I couldn’t handle it – but I used to work with two people who are exactly as described in that article. One of them, when applying for jobs, would create a DM piece for that company as his CV. They did more for the profile of that company than anyone else, and it’s gone steadily downhill since they left.
To take your comment further though, except in a very few industries (and I’m thinking of highly process driven ones here) if your boss expects you to just blindly follow instructions then it’s probably that boss that needs to go!
Fabulous! Some great reads for a Monday morning and I’m totally sharing that second one with my other half, thankfully he doesn’t commit many of the fashion sins on that list but he really ought to know that there’s more to dressing than can be afforded by t-shirts and combats.
Mm I always love your links! They are always so interesting!
Email me your address btw. mypinkheels@hotmail.com
… and I STILL can’t get enough of those Antarctica photos. That such a barren wasteland can have such beauty almost makes you forget about all the other crap in the world! And full props to the photograhers – I’d struggle to take some of those photos in full light and at livable temperaturs, let alone in darkness and at 40 below.
Well thanks for providing the link in the first place! The photos are so beautiful.
Sounds like you need a trip to Antarctica yourself.
