Whittakers vs Cadbury

I wanted to include this advert in yesterday’s Pick N Mix but couldn’t find it online anywhere. It has shown up on NZ TV recently after big changes made by one of our major chocolate manufacturers. Cadbury has moved production to Australia, reduced the size of their blocks of chocolate, reduced the amount of cocoa solids in the chocolate and added palm oil to their recipe (which not only negatively affects the taste of the chocolate but also contributes to deforestation in Indonesia).

Whittakers’ is taking a well deserved dig at them here. I think without even trying Whittakers’ has just taken a large chunk of Cadbury’s consumer base, Cadbury basically handed it to them on a platter.

If you would like to protest against Cadbury’s use of palm oil you can join the Facebook group or sign the petition.

On the rare occasion I eat chocolate, I eat Lindt or Scarborough Fair or if I am being really indulgent, Kinder Bueno Surprise (oh yum!)

I haven’t checked the ingredients in a long time, I will be upset if any of them contain palm oil. Silly Cadbury’s! I would stop buying from them if I bought from them in the first place :)

Yes I’ve seen all the hubub about Cadbury and their new stingy practices on twitter! It’s awful, but then again I can’t say I eat that much chocolate. The last chocolate my husband bought was Wittaker’s, actually. I love those little Lindt balls, myself :D

I am passionate about chocolate ( I really am!) so this is very disappointing to know. No more Cadburys for moi. Petition signed, suck balls and rot in your own corporate greed, cadbury. Having said that, I’ll be checking the ingredients of ALL choccy (amongst other things) more thoroughly from now on.
methinks I’d like to make my own chocolate….always wanted to try it, and now even more so- at least i can control what goes in it!

I’m a chocolate fiend. And I generally have to buy a family size block or it’s not worth it!

I think most chocolate is fine. The cheap stuff that generally comes out at xmas and easter probably has palm oil in it but Whittakers, Lindt etc is good. The hardest thing is that it’s usually listed in ingredients as vegetable oil.

Making your own chocolate could be interesting. I’m far too lazy for that though!

    Shame on cadbury. tut tut!

Thanks for the links and for following up on this item! I wonder if you know my bestie, City the NZ Cupcake Queen?

  8. Ms Constantine Says:

Hey Carly. I don’t know City but have definitely heard her name and seen her around online.

Cadbury’s really stuffed up here, we’ve banned it from work!

Oh my goodness, there’s no way we’d be able to run adds like that in Canada…we’re too stuffy :) Too bad we don’t have Whittakers’ bars over here. Stinkers.
Soooo addicted to chocolate – went to a chocolate factory in San Francisco last year…the aroma was intoxicating…mmmmm

I think everyone’s a bit surprised about that ad being played in New Zealand too. But they’re not lying, they’re not making any false claims, so it must be ok.
Whittakers is great, I used to always choose Cadbury chocolate over Whittakers, but not anymore. I got a block of toasted coconut and ate it in two days. :]

Since they changed the packaging, size and ingredients (basically everything BUT the price) in Australia a couple of months ago, I have refused to buy Cadbury chocolate. I think the new size isn’t going so well, because it’s been on special for $3.00 for the past month or so at Coles :P
(even on special, I refuse to buy it. It’s the principle of the thing!)

i had heard whispers about cadbury changing up some things, but i must admit i didn’t know the specifics – that’s just shameful. i’m not sure if we have whittakers over here, but i’ll be keeping an eye out for sure.

I haven’t bought cadbury for the last three years, once I went from vegetarian to vegan. They sucked, as they didn’t make any chocolate without milk products. Now this palm oil, what’s next..

I still buy easter eggs etc for family, but this year will be buying other brands. Eg. Ferrero Rocher
