Things I Have an Unnatural Dislike For

Things I Have an Unnatural Dislike For

  • & – I really wish people would just write and. I think & is pretty as a symbol and I use it a lot when writing with a pen, but as a substitute for a typed word I hate it. My business is called Cupcakes and Mace, not Cupcakes & Mace! :] (it actually makes me shudder to see it written that way.)
  • Boats – Nothing happened to make me so scared of them, but I am. I refuse to go on one, to the point that it excludes me from some family gatherings (well The Boy’s family gatherings, mine don’t seem to do boats as recreation).
  • Doors being left ajar – I am mildly OCD when it comes to certain things, and doors are one of those things. Wardrobe doors must always be shut in the room that I’m sleeping in. My toilet door should always be closed. And the door to our second bedroom clicks into place when you’ve closed it properly, if it doesn’t click I send The Boy back to do it again. (who’d want to live with me?!)
  • Pastel colours – Eurgh
  • Doing the dishes – I would rather scrub the toilet than clean the dishes. I tend to work things into a frenzy in my mind and I’ve done that with dishes. At first I just didn’t like doing them because they’re a chore, then I preferred to dry rather than wash, then I started to get pissed off when I had to do the dishes, now I actually feel upset when the prospect of doing the dishes is upon me. It fills me with an unnatural dread, I hate staying at peoples houses because the house guest is expected to do the dishes out of politeness. I’m so relieved when people have dishwashers.
    Am I crazy?
  • People calling me – I’m a writer, and I deal with people in other parts of the world most of my day, so I expect to communicate with written words – email, twitter, blog comments, facebook, chat, and texting, and not with a voice call. We actually get so few calls that when someone rings I get a bit freaked out and think someone has died.
  • Playing hide and seek and tiggy – My biggest fear is being chased. Any time I  feel like someone could be following me I get freaked out. If someone is running after me I prefer to run into a corner and turn around to face them because having someone running after me freaks me the fuck out.

What makes you shudder unnecessarily?

Oops, I always use ‘&’ on Twitter to shorten my tweets, sorry! (And I see it appears in my username.. again, sorry!)

Most of my shudder-worthy culprits are public transport related.. people who talk excessively loud on their mobile phones (not the most pleasant thing in the world first thing in the morning or last thing at night! Even worse if it’s an extremely personal topic..), people who refuse to move from their aisle seat when you actually need to get out from yours (and instead do that weird, turn-your-body thing – UBER frustrating if I’m carrying a lot of bags, how am I supposed to get out?!), people who sit next to you when you’re carrying a lot of bags and there’s a THOUSAND other empty seats around (being squished: not fun).. yikes. I REALLY need to get my license! :p

  2. Gem Says:

boats make me uncomfortable too. i can only handle being in one if i’m close enough to land that i could swim to shore in the event of anything bad happening.

one of my weirder shudder-inducing things is that i can’t let my teeth touch the wooden stick in the centre of paddle-pop type iceblocks. EVER. i actually leave the last little bit of iceblock or icecream on the stick so that I don’t have to touch it with my teeth. even thinking about it makes me feel yucky.

  3. Ms Constantine Says:

Using & in twitter is ok, you need to make it short.

Yours are perfectly natural dislikes. Who likes sharing transport space with heaps of people?!

  4. Ms Constantine Says:

Lol nice one Gem, I’ve never heard of someone who doesn’t like the iceblock stick!

  5. Kylie Says:

I am toooooooootally guilty of overusing & – I blame twitter. Unfortunately the habit has spilled out onto my blog and other writing too!

I have an unnatural dislike for blue ink pens, coffee cups with stupid designs or logos on them AND people using the wrong word for your/you’re, etc. Also people that overuse the !

I could go on and on and on but doing so would make me feel really grouchy, so I quit.

    =)

  6. Poppy Says:

I agree with the &, I love it in poetry but in prose (like using lower-case letters where inappropriate) it just seems pretentious. I also have to have wardrobe doors closed in rooms I am sleeping in, as well as drawers shut. That stems more from childhood overactive imagination (monsters!) than OCD though…

I am phobic of praying mantis’. Otherwise I dislike encountering people I know unexpectedly, people who text and walk, particularly up stairs, and the usual – people chewing gum, listening to loud music, mouth breathers, heavy nose breathers…

I get irritated at lots of things. Also, that green colour is one of my favourite colours, and is almost the same colour as my website background haha.

  7. Ms Constantine Says:

Your unexpected encounters with people you know reminded me that I hate people calling me. I added it to the list now. :]

I think my wardrobe phobia (I do the drawers as well actually) probably stems from childhood fears too. But it has morphed!
Damn that just reminded me of something else for the list.

  8. Ms Constantine Says:

I totally overuse ! sorry. Everytime I use it is an actual time I’d be exclaiming in real life though, maybe I’m too hyper?

I much prefer black ink to blue, but all the stray pens I pick up seem to be blue or red.

  9. Kylie Says:

I am also really annoyed when I run into people I know. I don’t understand why at all but it just makes me really uncomfortable!

  10. Kylie Says:

No, no, no, no. When I say overuse of ! I’m talking about people that do not use periods. I’m talking about every. single. sentence ending with ! or even worse !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Fiend Says:

Oh, your dislike of boats is totally warranted. I have NIGHTMARES about the Brisbane river.

I have a very strong dislike of flying insects. I especially dislike moths and cockroaches, because I’m afraid of them touching me, or worse, getting all caught up in my hair.

    Also, puppets.

  12. SARAH HANNAH Says:

washing the dishes is easily my most hated, dreaded chore in the entire world. honestly, it is the worst thing ever!

i hate clowns and people dressed up inside costumes of animals or giant characters like micky mouse. they creep me out.

im also verrry particular about my personal space. i hate people who stand to close or talk into my face. blah!

  13. Penelope Says:

I like ampersands, boats & pastel colours, hehe (agree with you on the phone calls).
My unnatural thing is that I can’t stand being near birds flapping their wings. Think I must’ve been swooped when I was little because it scares the bejesus out of me!

  14. Jackie Says:

I actually don’t mind doing the dishes. But I HATE putting the dishes away after they’ve dried. Ugh.

I hate doors when they’re slightly open too. It just alters the entire atmosphere of the room, and it makes me feel uneasy.

  15. simi Says:

I’m with you on the dishes thing. UGH!
I also need wardrobe doors closed. If they’re open, it kinda feels like there’s somebody in there spying on you. Irrational I know, but it irks me!
I hate it when I get out of the shower, get dressed, and put stockings or socks on, then I thoughtlessly stand on the wet bathmat and make said stockings or socks wet on the bottom. O.o
I hate those boho/hippy clothes that try to make a comeback every spring/summer.
I hate passive aggressive pricks who just fucking stand there behind you in the supermarket aisles looking impatient instead of using the initiative to say “excuse me, could I get past please?” GRRRRRRR!!
There are oh so many more, but I don’t wanna come off as a neurotic bitch.
    Oops- too late!

  16. Ms Constantine Says:

Lol, that’s ok. I’m pretty damn neurotic myself. I embrace the nerousis!

  17. Poppy Says:

Oh yes I forgot, I also have this fear of looking in mirrors at night – i.e., when I get up half-asleep to go to the toilet, I am petrified of washing my hands and looking into the mirror. I then half-run back to bed and usually do a flying leap because when I was little I was scared that monsters under the bed would grab my feet (thanks, R. L. Stein.) It stems from a friend in high school telling me that she was scared that if she looked in mirrors at night there would be something, I can’t remember what, that would do something bad, again can’t remember what. Even though I can’t remember what she told me, I still get heart-thumpingly scared.

    I sound really neurotic.

  18. Ms Constantine Says:

I do the same thing Poppy, so I always make sure all of the lights are on when I go to the bathroom at night and I only turn them off as I’m leaving the room and can’t possibly see the mirror any more.
And when I do run and jump into bed it’s because I’m scared somethings following me, as if the bed is a protector.

For a while I had to leave the room before the toilet finished flushing as well, that was a few years ago though.

This is all reminding me why I could never live alone!

  19. It’s OK To Be Psychotic | Cupcakes and Mace Says:

[...] to everyone who shared their neurosis over the last couple of days. We’re all in this [...]

  20. Lynda Says:

You had me at your brilliant blog name – CUPCAKES AND MACE! LOVE THE TITLE! Then I read about your issues with the AND SIGN. (I cannot even type the symbol here.) I share your grief! You also have me at the pastel colours…YIKES!….and being chased…(WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO BE CHASED??? Whhhhhhhhyyyyyy?!)

  21. Ms Constantine Says:

    Lol, thanks Lynda!

  22. urban craft Says:

I find & is only appropriate for things that go together:
    Peanut butter & jelly
    peaches & cream

I love the amper but if it’s:
I went the the mall & like, totally couldn’t find the aqua net & lipgloss & like, had to use mousse & chapstick.
    That’s totally bogus.
