Pick N Mix – Week Starting 7 September 2009

Pick N Mix - 7 September 2009
  • Christoph Rehage walked 4500km and took self portraits all along the way. His video isn’t the usual one shot per day deal, he combines it with short clips and series of pictures. It’s totally awesome!
  • I promise to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.
  • Olivia is sick of naked gyrating people selling perfume. It’s not sexy anymore, it’s just expected. We need intrigue again!
  • Rasputin: Fighter Jet Pilot.
  • The CEO of American Apparel is a serial sexual harasser and AA in general uses amateur soft porn for advertising. Please don’t give them your money. (NSFW)
  • funny pictures of dogs with captions
  • Gone are the days of debating with your friends what the difference between nerd and geek is! The Nerd Venn Diagram solves all questions.
  • For business advice that is fun to read I always look to IttyBiz. Naomi has a potty mouth like me, but shares her crazy stories a lot better than me, I’m trying to learn from her. An oldie but a goodie is her story about peeing and trying to get stuff done when you’re working from home and there are too many distractions, you’ll have to read it to see why it’s so funny.
  • The most stunning back piece I have ever seen. And it’s not even finished yet. I want a tattoo more desperately every day.
  • People Of Walmart went viral very quickly. I think everyone in the world likes to gawk at “weirdo Americans”.
  • Some people have so much damn talent you don’t know what to look at first.
  • Mud cake wrestling! It’s my birthday soon btw.
  • When I was younger Mum used to listen to Michael Bolton, he was one of the first musicians I listened to on a regular basis. When I got a little bit older I learned it was NOT ok to listen to Michael Bolton unless you’re a sappy middle aged woman.
Now that I love to challenge social expectations I’m very happy to say that I LOVE Michael Bolton in this song. I also love Lady Gaga but think she ruins the song by singing in it (assuming that is actually her singing, the song was leaked so nothing is confirmed) and in effect I hate the chorus but love the rest of the song to pieces. Lady G did great work on the lyrics though.

I told Putin he was an internet celebrity now but he just rolled onto his back and looked at his stomach. Thanks for the nod!

  2. Ms Constantine Says:

Haha, cats…too cool to give a crap that they’re famous.

  3. Fiend Says:

That back piece is amazing! Every time I look at beautiful pictures like that, I get seeeeeerious tattoo envy.

  4. Katie Says:

I love those lolcats and dogs! They amuse me to no end :)

Dov Charney is such a creepy guy. I met him breifly in LA and his eyes did not leave my chest. Dunno if I agree completely with the whole AA thing- yes, alot of the ads look like soft core porn but dont forget the models are willing participants and know that their images will end up like that. Dont they have some responsibility too? Also, considering they aren’t professional models but AA sales assitants 99% of the time…

LOVE the back peice too. I want to get a side/rib peice so badly but the pain sends shivers down my very being. even though i have 10 tatts already…

Ittybiz article= pure gold! Oh dear god how I related! Unlike her though, I won’t be having another baby! STRESS!!!

Ewwww, American Apparel :S I’ve never really known much about them, or seen any of those ads before. Bad taste in the extreme. What a creep that guy must be. Why on earth would any woman want to work for such a sleaze? let alone agree to pose in photos he’s probably wanking over in his office right now. *shudder*

I want tattoos! WAHHHH!!! My problem is sticking to the same idea for long enough to get it permanently etched into my skin. I have some ideas though :)

I’m in agreement with the whole perfume (and every other product possible it seems) ad thing. We want to WEAR and SMELL our perfume, not fuck it. And she’s so spot on when she talks about all that “celebrating the beauty of a womans body” bullshit. It’s the celebration of KATE MOSS’S body, getting freaky with a perfume bottle. It is so damn predictable! Sex sells, yes, but it also shows a remarkable lack of IMAGINATION. In a world of my own (cue Alice In Wonderland music) Tim burton would make all the ads. :D

Yay Fightclub! I personally think it was a very clever movie! I hate psuedo arty wankers who sneer when you’re not pretentious enough for them. The irony is, they probably only watch all those european arthouse movies for the phenomenal amount of booby contained within them. I must admit, I likes me some arty farty films from time to time, but what the hell is wrong with admitting to being entertained to anything slightly mainstream? Sometimes it’s a great escape to just sit there on the couch and have some cheap laughs to “Blades of Glory” or “Zoolander”. :)

Anyway, I’ve written a goddamn essay here. Time to get some shit done!

I wish I had the money to finish my tattoos :(

I haven’t been to that People of Wal-mart site, because I have read a few articles about it. This is a pretty good one: http://stuffwhitepeopledo.blogspot.com/2009/09/make-classist-web-sites.html as is this one at Bitch: http://bitchmagazine.org/post/hateraid-people-of-walmart-edition

  8. Ms Constantine Says:

I totally get that the women in the ads are willing in the photoshoots, I’m not saying that they’ve been tricked or forced into doing it. I’m saying that AA is a totally skeezy company to use the soft core porn as their advertisements.

The whole company just reeks of sleaze.

  9. Ms Constantine Says:

If Tim Burton made all the ads maybe I’d be inclined to watch some of them!

I love many arty farty films too, I can appreciate cinematography and weirdo storylines. But my favourite type of movie is the graphic novel turned to film type. :D

  10. Ms Constantine Says:

Sure I see your point, but do you ever look at a celebrity and think what she’s wearing is hideous? Or if you saw a goat tied up outside your local supermarket would you think WTF? Same diff.
Also, many of the pictures could end up on Fail blog. Is that classist too?

I don’t think this is an issue of class at all. It’s about finding people that do things differently weird or funny and having a laugh or WTF moment at their expense.
