Pick N Mix – Week Starting 21 Deccember 2009
- So it turns out that James Chartrand from Men with Pens is actually a woman! Wow. Reading why she pretended to be a man online for so long was so interesting and proves that sexism is alive and well in the world. Many now say James can’t be trusted and has negatively affected gender bias by not pushing through and making it as a woman, I say she did what she had to do and is making everyone really think about why this revelation affects them at all.
- The cast of The Big Bang Theory recreate memorable moments in 2009 – Jim Parsons in an Edward wig! Johnny Galecki in a Susan Boyle dress!
- Korea does it again: Men’s pantihose. (possibly NSFW definitely NSFL)
- One of the tasks in my 101 in 1001 list is to complete no less than 15 photography projects. I follow sh1ft.org to get ideas and instructions and one of my favourite tasks is A Day In The Life. The next one planned is for New Years, either the 31st or 1st or both and the idea is that you take one photo each hour to show what the day was like. Who’s in?
- Formal qualifications aren’t necessary in most industries. There are other ways to succeed in life that don’t involve $100,000 of debt. This list of 30 of the worlds most successful drop outs might make you think twice about how necessary that bit of paper really is. Bill Gates, check; Steve Jobs, check; Matt Mullenweg, Ralph Lauren, Richard Branson, check check check.
- Dumbledore is confused.
- Stress levels in relation to vacations. (lots of stress, not much relaxation!)
- Wow, this is a breathtaking tattoo.
- Gone but leaving a great legacy. A reminder to never answer kids with “just because”, help them find out why and you’ll probably both learn something.
- The kindness of strangers.
- Irony creeps! You start saying totes or lol out loud to take the piss and not so long after you just say it because you’re used to it. It’s no longer ironic, it just is. Same deal with clothes, one day your hideous knitted sweater is ironic the next it is comfy and warm.

The BIg Bang Theory shots are awesome – I don’t watch it much but I enjoy it every time I do, and this photoshoot is so well done! Bridget (sorry, I don’t know her real life OR Big Bang name – Kaley??) looks hilariously realistic as Kate Goselin!

I think some of the negeative reactions against James Chartrand are justified, specifically, that she didn’t just adopt a male name but a sexist male persona as well: http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/sexist/2009/12/15/james-chartrands-constructed-masculinity-goes-far-beyond-the-pen-name/ J. K. Rowling and George Eliot and so forth took on pen names and managed to not turn into misogynists.

Thank you Poppy! That was a really great article and certainly explained why the negative attitudes exist, and it definitely made me rethink my stand on the topic. I’m not a regular reader of Men with Pens so hadn’t actually seen all that much of James’ writing.
Now that I think about it properly the main reason I don’t read Men with Pens is because I don’t feel welcome with the name making it sound like it’s a blog by men for men.

lol. It’s Penny in BBT and Kaley in real life. I’ve never seen Jon and Kate to compare her picture with Kate’s…I think that’s a good thing really. :p
