Mama I Love You

The long awaited reveal is finally here. I’m still shocked that y’all care so much about my ink, but I really do appreciate your interest and your twitter help with quashing my fears that my arm was going to fall off (ok that’s an exaggeration but I thought it might heal horribly or all the ink would fall out) because it scabbed over.

My wrist tattoo scabbed a bit too so I might just have the type of skin that does that. Or I might have been leaking too much plasma. Or I might have kept it too moist. Or I could be mildly allergic to the black and red inks. Who knows.

What I do know is that I’m still going through the sunburn peel stage and that means it doesn’t look as amazing as it could right now. But I gave myself a deadline and made a promise to reveal on Giftmas day when my Mum had seen the tattoo and so I’m sharing some photos anyway. When it is completely healed I’ll share better photos.

I can’t draw at all so in early October I took a sheet of designs I liked to Tattoo City and asked for a Mum heart to be designed. I was the annoying customer that doesn’t know what the fuck they want, but amazingly Ben came up with a design from my very vague instruction and as soon as I saw it I knew what I wanted. The original puffy waves things turned into splatters and the ochre turned into blue. The text became fatter and turned into a cut out, and the heart turned into black. And just 2 days before my appointment I saw the finalised design and it was exactly as I’d seen it in my mind.

Getting Tattooed

The 14th saw me freaking out in nervous anticipation. I had so many butterflies I didn’t feel I could eat anything (but forced myself to) and ended up feeling a bit nauseous. Thankfully Sarah-Rose suggested I have some rescue remedy and my buddy, and companion for the day, Stacey had some on hand to calm my nerves. It worked a treat.

Anyway, everything went as planned. It hurt most in the elbow crease and inner arm and after an hour and forty minutes I was very ready for it to be done. I breathed through the pain and closed my eyes. Stacey took photos and made me laugh. It was bandaged, I bled, and leaked, and swelled like a balloon. And I’m so happy with it.

Yep, I put up with this ugly scabbing for about 5 days!

Consider me addicted.

Happy Giftmas! I hope you got something you wished for.

Why that would be the song that features in one of the fantasy sequences in the greatest movie ever made.

“Thank GOD for boarding school, I only see mine once a year”.

You already know I think it’s awesome!

    Awesome, I love the colours.
It’s healed up nicely. The one on my back was all scabby & whenever I’d put cream on it I’d come away with black flakes all over my hand. Gross.
    What did your Mum say?

O it’s not completely healed yet. Almost all of the photos, except for the scabbed one, were taken in the shop after getting it done. The swelling photo was taken the next night.

I think I still have a couple of days of peeling left.

Mum looked a bit shocked when I showed her so I thought maybe she didn’t like it. But I asked her about it last night and she said she was just taking in the fact that I would put myself through the pain to have myself tattooed for her. She was really chuffed. Result!

  7. Ms Constantine Says:

    Sure is the Spice Girls!
I’m glad you like it. The placement is great for this size, especially as it’s the only tatt on my arm (so far!).

It looks total awesomesauce! Yeah it is great having someone there with you. My friend Liz was at both of mine which was cool cause one was done in Auckland and the other was done in a toilet of a student flat in Dunedin. Needless to say that one scabbed uo but came out great it needs a little touch up but nothing major!

It looks great and yes it is a addiction :)

  9. Lisa Says:

Aww that made me a little teary eyed. That and it looks like you’re wearing a unicorn tshirt? You’re pretty much awesome.

  10. Whit Says:

LURVE IT!! Love the colors, the design, the placement, and of course, that it’s a tribute to your Mum. Can’t wait to see the next one :).

  11. Ms Constantine Says:

I am wearing a unicorn shirt! I love it.

  12. Carly Says:

You new tattoo looks great! My tattoos have all scabbed over and flaked off. It’s part of the healing process, you’ve had a needle scratch your skin and deposit ink into it. Don’t pick at it and it will look great when it’s healed.

  19. AsylumDolly Says:

Awww! Sweet! I bet your mum feels honoured :) I hope it’s all healed up nicely now!

  20. Ms Constantine Says:

Preeeety much. There is still a little bit of peeling where he did the bleed line on the heart. Hmmmm.

  21. Jaka Merriman Says:

Eeeeee! I love it! I just got back from vacation, so I’m catching up (sorry I’m a bit late). There’s something charming about a Mom tattoo, especially when it’s on ladies. I can’t wait to see what your next ink projekt is!

  22. Rene Says:

I just got a tattoo with similar colors and of about the same size. i was worried about it because its scabbing like this one. Did the scabs just fall off? It looks like if they fall off ill loose the color

  23. Vitamin K Says:

    Hi Rene
Eventually it healed and the scabs came off on their own. Whatever you do do not peel them off, then the colour will almost certainly be pulled out as well. Try not to put too much cream on the scabs either.
