Lasers and Baubles

Since Asia I’ve finally had some motivation to give the jewellery business much needed attention. The brain elves have decided to get off their asses, of only for a quick walk around the block.

I’ve been experimenting with new designs and techniques, filling laser etching with colour and using multiple layers of acrylic. I’ve been cross stitching as well (but still haven’t found an appropriate pendant frame to make cross stitched jewellery, boo).

Here is what’s new in the shop (click the photos to see them on Etsy)
Lightning Necklace
Silver Mirror Ag Necklace
Cupcake Ampersand
Camera necklace

All the old faves are still there – unicorns, narwhals, cupcakes, and plenty of custom designs.

Happy Birthday Cupcakes and Mace (COMPETITION!!) [closed]

It’s a very exciting day in the Cupcake Factory as one year ago cupcakesandmace.com was born.
“But posts in your archive go back to March 2008″ I hear you cry. And yes, you are right. When this blogging thing started for me I went through a few names before I decided I wanted to take blogging a more seriously and register a domain.

Life has changed a lot since then. I’m self employed now, blogging, thinking up pretties, and interacting with customers on a daily basis. I really appreciate everyone who has joined me along the way. Thanks to you I have no plans to give this thing up.

To say thank you and to celebrate this milestone I’m giving you the present! We’ve started designing necklace squares with helvetica text. I have no idea what to call them collectively, so feel free to help me out.

The Rules

All you have to do is comment and let me know what you’d like your square to say if you win. It can say anything at all. Easy as.

The winner will be picked by a random name draw, but if we really like your idea there might be a prize heading your way too.

And as per usual if you’d like extra entries post a link from your blog to the comp or tweet about it.

You have a week. I’ll draw the winner next weekend on the 3rd of October. And then it’ll be your turn to send me the presents as it’s my birthday on the 9th of October. :D

Pretty Shiny Things

We’ve been busy in the Cupcake Factory this month, adding a lot of new things to the store in an effort to give you something to look at for more than one minute! We’re going to continue adding new stock and designs until we reach at least 100 products so there is plenty more to come.

These are new products added over the last couple of weeks. Each picture will take you to the Etsy page for more photos and information. (And everything is less than $18 :D)

Nameplate Competition Winner

Somehow I decided that making my first bloggy video would be a good way to announce the winner of the nameplate necklace competition despite being a terrible actress, having no idea how to edit video, and never having made one before. Once I got started though I was determined to finish.
So here it is, atmospheric feedback and all. Please go easy on me.

I thought Sarah-Rose was very right when she said that font 5 would look adorable as a sweary word so I got it cut last night. I’m wearing it in the video and below.

Just as I finished recording the courier came with a package for me from Pakistan. It was all wrapped in cloth and I was a bit scared of it till I remembered my glasses were coming from Pakistan!
They are amazing for $26 NZD delivered! The right eye feels slightly blurred My ears are wonky so the right eye doesn’t line up properly all the time and is a teensy bit less clear, but I can still see great in them, they look cool and they even came with a hard case and cloth. Woop, will definitely be buying glasses online again.

New $26 glasses

Now I’m off to see Harry Potter. :D

O and please don’t name the winner in the comments so it’s a surprise.

Cupcakes and Mace Survey Results

Thank you SO much to everyone who participated in the Cupcakes and Mace survey

I started a couple of weeks ago. I had more responses than I thought I would, it was nice to get a range of responses from people that are Cupcakes and Mace lovers and read everyday, through to the people that are just passing by stopping in once and a while.
An extra big thanks to everyone who left comments with explanations for their answers, and tips and advice.

As promised here are some results and information I took from your responses.

Cupcakes and Mace regular posts

  • Some of the results were expected. You all still like Pick N Mix the most with almost 70% of people marking that they love Pick N Mix posts.
  • People were split about Hier Und Jetzt (which is Here and Now in German). A few people love it, a few think it’s OK, but most like it. It’ll be sticking around and I’ll make tweaks as I go. It’s the most diary part of this site.
  • Results were spread evenly between love, like, and OK for the Indie Finds, Things I Love, and Things I Loathe posts. Many of you can’t stand the Gala Darling style Things I Love Thursday posts, and while a few of you love Things I Loathe Thursday I think the majority prefer not to read that type of negativity. I’m going to keep these types of posts to a minimum or combine them with Hier Und Jetzt. I don’t particularly like the way I’ve done Indie Finds so there will be no more of them until I think of a way to make them interesting and pretty.
  • You were also split over the Short and Sweet reviews with equal numbers loving, liking, and thinking they are just OK. I really like doing them so I’m going to continue to do them, but I’ll make it more obvious that they are written they way they are because I’ve only given myself 30 words for the review. I’ll also try to warn about spoilers (sorry!).
  • Most of you love ‘Because You Asked’ and ‘The Week In Photos’ so they will be sticking around and I’ll work on remembering to take more photos to share. There were a few requests for Daily Outfit shots as well, I’ll work on actually getting dressed and leaving the house and then start on taking photos. :p

Prefered style of posts

In the love column:

  1. link posts
  2. photo posts
  3. how-tos for cooking and crafting

In the like column:

  1. reviews
  2. cool finds
  3. wishlists
  4. things I love
  5. things I hate
  6. advice
  7. quotes and short statements
  8. how-tos for business and blogging
  9. outfit posts

In the OK column:

  1. music recommendations

Extras

  • When you think about the Cupcakes and Mace blog you think about links, bright colours, jewellery, quirkiness, humour, rebellion, and attitude. Seems that my point is getting across!
  • The majority of respondents have been reading Cupcakes and Mace between 3 and 6 months and subscribe to the RSS feed.
  • Over 80% of you want to hear more about the jewellery business, with one specific request for more pics of my jewellery.
  • One commenter noted they didn’t like my header. I didn’t either, I’ve simplified it a lot now. Thanks :]
  • Another commenter requested a more thorough about page. Will be working on this too when I can think of some interesting things to say about myself.
  • Gratitude was expressed for my no bullshit way of writing. That’s something you can continue to expect from me. If I start sounding like I’m a marketing manager please tell me to stfu.
  • I realised before I started the survey that regular content was taking a back seat to all the regular posts I’d been doing. It was one of the main reasons I felt compelled to survey you about what you want. Hopefully you’ve seen a bit of an improvement in the past couple of weeks. It’s something I’ll continuously work on.

Alrighty. Take from that what you will, use it to improve your own blog if my audience is one you want. And please let me know through comments, emails, tweets etc if you’ve got any requests or constructive criticism for this blog.

It’s hard to put yourself out there knowing that all you can do is wait and hope that people respond positively, but it’s worth it. As long as you remember to take everything with a grain of salt.

COMPETITION – Cupcakes and Mace Nameplate Fonts

The biggest jewellery seller in the Cupcakes and Mace shop is the nameplate necklace. Any name you like (up to 9 letters included in the price) in any colour from our range, and a choice from two chains for just $25 USD.

People love them, they love that they are completely customisable, and that we can cut a shape out of many of the letters for no extra charge. We’ve cut cupcakes, hearts, apples, a bird and a skull so far. The biggest problem with customising these nameplates is finding appropriate fonts, most of the flicks in the script type fonts are too thin to hold it all together during a bit of wear. Our current default font is Courier New (#1 below), it looks good and holds together really well. We let people choose their own fonts too, but we’ve figured that people don’t like having to find out what they want by themselves, it’s much preferable to be given a short list to choose from.

competition

That’s where you come in. Have a look at the list below, and let me know your top 3 choices (in order of preference) in the comments. Your comment will get you in the draw to win your very own nameplate so make sure you use a valid email address! :D

Extra entries are available to anyone who spreads the word about the competition, just leave comment letting me know where you left the link.

The competition will close in 2 weeks on the 15th of July so get commenting.

My favourites are 5, 8, 1, and 3.

Positive Feedback Makes the Difference

As an indie seller working with something I’ve designed and created myself (rather than working in a larger office type setting) I’m finally beginning to realise just how important giving positive feedback is.

Often the companies you’re dealing with are a lot smaller than you realise, or than the “companies” lead you to believe. I often receive emails addressed to “the people of Cupcakes and Mace” when officially there’s only me. With a one or two person team the feedback reaches deeper than usual, and if they know their customers are enjoying something they’ll make an effort to create more, and communicate more. You may even end up getting a few freebies.

Even though I’m undecided on whether feedback for Etsy sellers is appropriate to display on their shops (much like Ebay or Trade Me does) I always get a big grin when I do get feedback or emails praising my work or my service.

So don’t forget to praise your local business owner, blog writer, volunteer, or customer service rep when they do a good job today. They’ll love you for it!

Ready to Craft

Carpe Diem - Seize the Day

Opening an Etsy shop can be as frivolous or intensive experience as you want it to be. It really depends on how serious the craft business is to you.

If you’re looking to make Etsy an important part of your business there are HEAPS of articles available. A simple Google search or even better a browse around the Etsy forums or The Storque will give you lots of information on every aspect you can think of. Following links from all of the posts currently out there will keep you occupied for days and I’m also more than happy to answer any specific questions you’ve got about the points in this post, or your shop in general.

With all that information on hand and your Etsy Sellers Handbook on the ready I don’t feel like there is any real need for me to go into depth about starting a shop. So here’s a brief guide to getting started with some of the lessons I’ve learnt so far.

What are you called?

First things first. Once you’ve chosen your product, and assessed if there is a market (knitwear FYI doesn’t tend to do well on Etsy, and there is already a saturated jewellery market so yours better have a unique point) you’ll need to pick a name. If you’re already an Etsy member and you signed up with a name that has nothing to do with your brand then you’re going to have to sign up again sorry. Hopefully you have a different email address you can assign your old login to so you can sign up again, if not you’ll need to contact Etsy direct to get them to close your other login. Login names can’t contain any spaces so if you’ve got more than one word in your name start them all with capital letters. It makes it easier to read. Mine is CupcakesAndMace.
Search around Etsy and the web to make sure you’re not infringing on anyone’s brand. Think of something memorable, easy to spell, and potentially a good search term. If you’re a blogger you’ll be familiar with this process as you would have had to do it when you came up with your blog name or domain name.

What do you look like?

Next you’ll need to create a banner and avatar. Along with your shop name and product photos these will be how Etsy users identify you and your brand. It’s better to use one of your best product photos as your avatar and not a picture of yourself. When you participate in the Etsy forum other members will see your picture and a great product shot might entice them to check out your wares.

What will you do?

Get your policies sorted before you start listing product. Which countries are you going to ship to, are you/can you offer wholesale and if so what are your terms, what happens if something gets lost or broken in the post, is insurance extra, how will you accept payment, when do you expect payment, can you do custom or altered pieces? There are lots of things to think about and you can’t expect people to stick around if you don’t have an answer for them.

Cupcakes and Mace Packaging

How will you present yourself?

Make sure you have your packaging sorted before you make your first sale. It needs to be sturdy enough to withstand the brutalities of any one of the worlds postal systems. Little known fact is that postal workers jump on piles of packages for fun. Make your package waterproof, address it correctly with a return address and include all necessary custom documentation. Don’t bow to pressure to fudge these documents because it could get you into some trouble.

What are you worth?

Pricing is very controversial but very important. I have a spreadsheet that I use to price my work and it’s something you should definitely think about too. It should take into account the cost of materials, packaging and fees. How long it takes to create, making sure to include time for taking photographs, trips to the post shop, listing the item and any other time you spend working. Multiply that time by your hourly rate. Add on your expected profit percentage. And you have your wholesale rate.
This is the rate you’ll sell to wholesale customers, people with their own business who will resell your items for profit. Standard practice is that wholesale is 50% of retail price, and wholesale customers will have to buy a certain amount from you to get the discount.
The wholesale rate is not the price you use on Etsy. You’ll need to multiply your wholesale rate by two to get your retail price. This is the price you’ll sell on Etsy for. Hopefully it meets current market expectations or is unique enough to sell at whatever price you’ve come up with. If it’s too expensive and you’re looking to make money you might need to reconsider your product, the materials, or the discount you give to wholesalers. Don’t ever sell yourself short though. Even if you’re doing this as a hobby remember that others are doing it for a living and if you undersell them too much they’ll get bitter.

How do I find you?

The title, description, and tags in Etsy are all very important as well. Searching on Etsy is defaulted to searching through titles and tags. Make sure your title is descriptive (but doesn’t look like a spammy list of search terms) and use all 14 of your tags! Use them, every time!

Oooo pretty!

The most important thing of all in my opinion is your photos. People like to buy things from professionals, if your photos look good they will automatically make your product seem more valuable and professional. Show your product from every necessary angle. You need to show the customer what they would see if they were holding your product.
Great photos might also get you featured in blogs, and on the Etsy home page.

Alright so now you know the basics, you need to go ahead and do it. If you have any questions or would like a post on a specific point of selling on Etsy let me know in the comments.

Cupcakes and Mace Reader Survey

My little baby is slowly starting to grow. But now that I’m a full time blogger crafter type it’s time to put some real work into the blog.
I have a short survey for y’all and I will be so grateful to find out what you think.

Take the survey

All of the questions are voluntary, and anonymous (unless you choose to give me your details at the end). You can answer as many questions as you like and they’ll all be counted.

Depending on the number of responses I get I’ll share the results on the blog and let you know if there is going to be any change in direction.

I’ll make this post sticky for a week or so so you can find it easily. Newer posts are below.

Thanks in advance!
