Walking Cliche

I found this in my drafts last night. A post I wrote in April 2010, and yet not much has changed. I lost a bit of interest in clothes but still dress pretty much the same. I wore the mentioned glasses with photochromic lenses all over Southeast Asia, but my newest pair were scored free from one of Clearly Contacts facebook deals.

30.04.10

If you started reading Cupcakes and Mace last year when I actually wrote you’d know I’m a t shirt fiend. Also a sneaker fiend. (I also love cake and movies but we’re talking about aesthetics right now ok.)

A while back it was suggested on twitter that I probably have about 45 black t shirts in my wardrobe and while I thought that was a bit hyperbolic I wasn’t sure what the real number was.

It currently sits around 25.

Note that that does not include t shirts of other colours, or black shirts in other styles. It is purely black t shirts with prints. The kind you get from Threadless and 1-day tee, and I have no intention of stopping. It’s a shame I don’t have more amazing skirts to wear them with, but that’s another value the tees add – a great excuse to buy skirts!

The sneaker collection has not grown much. I found a bright white pair of high tops with blue gingham around the top and yellow straps, they were on sale too! How could I resist. And my chucks are worn in enough now to wear regularly without needing plasters every time I put them on.

Add a new found addiction to buying glasses online, and a recent upsizing of my tunnels and you can see where all the money I don’t spend on food goes. Goggles 4U and Zenni Optical are online glasses retailers I can recommend first hand. Buying glasses in New Zealand is an expensive and slow business. Go to optometrist > pick glasses > pay around $600 for glasses > get glasses a few weeks later. If you have your prescription though, you can pick from hundreds of awesome frames, pay around $40 and have them delivered to your door in less than a week, even though they’re coming from somewhere like China or Pakistan. Carazy. Most recently I got this red amber pair from Zenni Optical which sit and fit perfectly.

And this grey pair with grey photochromic lenses (they get darker in bright light) which are winging their way to me now.

You can also see that I have turned into one of those stupid hipsters everyone hates. I have tattoos, 1/2″ ear lobes and big nerd glasses; I pair t shirts and pencil skirts with tights and high top sneakers; I act like an adolescent even though I’m in my mid twenties; I don’t have a real job and instead spend my time going for coffee and listening to pop music covered by metal bands.

I’m a walking cliche. And I’m awesome.

Nameplate Competition Winner

Somehow I decided that making my first bloggy video would be a good way to announce the winner of the nameplate necklace competition despite being a terrible actress, having no idea how to edit video, and never having made one before. Once I got started though I was determined to finish.
So here it is, atmospheric feedback and all. Please go easy on me.

I thought Sarah-Rose was very right when she said that font 5 would look adorable as a sweary word so I got it cut last night. I’m wearing it in the video and below.

Just as I finished recording the courier came with a package for me from Pakistan. It was all wrapped in cloth and I was a bit scared of it till I remembered my glasses were coming from Pakistan!
They are amazing for $26 NZD delivered! The right eye feels slightly blurred My ears are wonky so the right eye doesn’t line up properly all the time and is a teensy bit less clear, but I can still see great in them, they look cool and they even came with a hard case and cloth. Woop, will definitely be buying glasses online again.

New $26 glasses

Now I’m off to see Harry Potter. :D

O and please don’t name the winner in the comments so it’s a surprise.

Hier Und Jetzt – 10 July 2009

On my iPod: Crazy Sexy Cool by TLC

Watched this week: Bruno; Season 4 of the Gilmore Girls; Australia.

Best buy: I received an email last week from Goggles4u.com offering me a free pair of frames (because I had entered my prescription details on their site and signed up to their mailing list, not because I’m special) so I decided to have another look around. Googles4u is the place that had the amazing red and black frames I lusted after in another Hier Und Jetzt. It turns out that sometimes they hold only one or two pairs of a frame so you’ve got to be quick if you spot something you like.
Their prices are already ridiculously cheap at $13 for frames and a starting price of $17 for lenses, I couldn’t say no to an extra offer of free frames. So I ordered these babies. They promptly went into out of stock once I’d placed my order.

They shipped they day after I ordered them so should get here in another week. Even if they turn out to be shit, don’t fit my face etc it’s no big deal because they cost me less than a dinner at a restaurant. And shipping was free. Awesome!

On my wishlist: Blackbird’s Attackin’ in the Dead ‘O’ Night t shirt. Pretty, I love that it’s plain black on the back and mostly white with black pattern on the front. Unfortunately it is only left in L and XL size.

What I’m Loving: Whittaker’s toasted coconut block. I’m halfway through my second block of the week; Bruno!!; Being able to find out so much about peoples lives through the Internet. I’ve been feeling very voyeuristic this week; fully realising that gender and sexualities don’t need to fit into boxes and can be as fluid as you like; androgyny; swamps.

Favourite photo: Did you know that swamps are one of my favourite things to look at?

P.S don’t forget to enter the competition to win a nameplate necklace!

The drive to Hawkes Bay

12 April 2009
These swampy areas on the outskirts of Hawkes Bay are one of my favourite parts of the drive. It’s like a graveyard for dead and dried up trees. One day I’m going to get in there with waders and photograph it to death.

My camera can be pretty terrible and my hands are shakey, but I was determined to get a good picture of this cicada shell. I took heaps of photos!

14 April 2009 – My new glasses arrived today. I love them! You might not be able to tell but there are two pairs being “modelled” here. One is tortoiseshell Burberry and the other is black Genesis (which I think is a random rebranded name). The black ones make my eyes look huge (well, huger)!

New Glasses

Hier Und Jetzt – 3 April 2009

On my iPod: All of the System of a Down I own. I’m loving remembering how great they are and how great Serj’s voice is. (I highly recommend you listen to Highway Song or Hypnotize right now)

Book I’m reading: The Google Story by David Vise

On my wishlist: I’m planning to get my eyes checked in the next week or so, and I’ve wish listed about 10 pairs of glasses that I could order online for cheap (well cheaper than $600 which is what my current pair cost)! This pair is the craziest but I really want them. The frames are only $13 USD (!)  from Goggles4u.com.

Red black and gold specs

New blogs I’m following: A Home for Alice, Bad Questions for Yahoo Answers, endemicworld.com, The Chalkboard Manifesto, Said in bed. Plus all of you lovely bloggers who leave me comments, I see all of them and I check out all of your blogs, you’re all extremely talented and a great source of inspiration!

Best line: “You just need to lie a little bit and you get free sausages” – The Boy

Long story – the short version is that last night when we were walking home drunk we came across a group of Christians giving out free sausages and cookies. The boy proceeded with his usual drunken story telling, telling them they should be able to get free sausages to give away. After we’d carried on our way I told The Boy they probably wouldn’t be able to get them free because they’re not a fund raising group…and therefore you just need to lie a little bit and you can get free sausages. (ok I guess that wasn’t such a short version).

Present Day (Xmas) Wishlist

I like to call Xmas Present Day because it’s they day for presents and family and food. Celebration of a god I don’t believe in is insignificant.

These are the things I’m lusting after in a perfect world:

  1. Petticoats – I REALLY want a big fluffy petticoat. REALLY!
  2. Prettyfull sneakers – I already have these ones but I’m dismayed over the lack of pretty individual sneakers available. Note to shoemakers: Not all girls like wearing heels!
  3. Loungefly bag – I love Loungefly gear. I especially love this bag though. I WANT it. Damn you exchange rate. I’m not really asking for this stuff but if someone got me this bag I would love you forever!
  4. Marie Antoinette DVD – So I can play it on my computer and screen cap all the prettiness for inspiration. That’s going to be a whole lot of screen capping.
  5. Camera – I don’t actually own a camera of my own :S I currently use the boys one that I bought for his birthday a few years ago. He uses it at work a lot now so I can’t steal it. What kind of blogger am I?!
  6. Mindless Self Indulgence CDs – With the opening of JB Hi-Fi I have been lucky enough to score the CD Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy. I’m keen to get the rest of the discography though.
  7. Jewellery – Chunky jewellery, including this super cute baby bunny charm bracelet which I have the possibility of winning via Annie’s giveaway :D The site mentions an adult version but there’s no search function on the site and I can’t find it :[
  8. Hospital bracelets – I love them, I’m refusing to take off yesterdays hospital bracelet. I’d like to style them like Tilda Swinton as Gabriel in the movie Constantine. She wears them with the extra length of bracelet left in tact and words like passion and hope written on them. A metal version would be pretty damn awesome too, I found a Ksubi version a couple of years ago but it’s not for sale anymore.
  9. Labrets – Pretty labrets with attachments that are long enough. The pretty blue one I own now needs to be checked constantly to make sure it’s screwed on properly because the thread isn’t long enough. It’s fallen out more than once, luckily only when I’m sitting at my desk. It did come out in the shower once but I managed to save it just before the drain.
Labrets need to have more than one twist before they fall out.
  10. Darwin Fish – One of the little car plaques would be nice, but what I’d really love is for everyone to come to their senses and realise “There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life”.
  11. Glasses – Still need some scene glasses.
  12. Sprout the life you love – Perfect for aspiring female entrepreneurs.
Wreck this journal – I also REALLY want this. I think it’d be an excellent way to nurture my baby creative skills.
  13. Tattoo – This is more about finding something I love enough that I will want it inked onto me FOREVER.
  14. Glitter – I like sparkles so a glitter bar would be ideal :D

I’ve loved seeing everyone’s lists around! They’ve been my favourite posts of late. If you haven’t done one yet get onto it and leave me the link. Otherwise let us know what you want in the comments.
